Jim Dettore started repairing heavy equipment in the mid 1980’s and doing machine work for a couple of large general contractors in Southern California. In 1990 he started with the local Caterpillar™ Dealer as a Hydraulic Shop Machinist. Since then, he has excelled in numerous positions as a Contractors Equipment Superintendent, Rental Company Training Director, and multiple Caterpillar Dealership positions such as Product Support Manager, Technical Services Manager, Corporate Headquarters Service Manager, Continuous Improvement Engineer, Technical Training Instructor, and Field Service Technician.

Jim’s education background is extensive having completed multiple manufacturers training programs through Caterpillar and other manufacturers. Courses consisted of Technical Service Management , Component Rebuild Center, LEAN CPS 6 Sigma Black Belt certification, Caterpillar Flagship Management Training, Gas Compression training, failure analysis training, service training on engine and equipment systems and components, Business Skills for Parts and Service Management, Continuous Improvement, and CNC Machining.

Jim is a seasoned failure analyst having first learned the science in 1991 while attending an Applied Failure Analysis training class. He was excited to learn about determining how failures occur, providing recommendations to avoid future failures, and working closely with customers to help solve difficult problems.

In 2014 Jim and his wife Maria purchased Failure Analysis Services, Inc. which was founded by the late Darrell Davis. Darrell was a well-known and tenured Cat employee that originally developed the manufacturers AFA training program. Since then, the couple has worked hard at updating and improving their training and consulting offerings while growing the business into a reputable training resource for several major Equipment and Engine Manufacturers, Equipment Dealerships, Mining Corporations, Gas Compression Companies, and the Marine OSV industry.

Throughout his career, Jim has earned a reputation for being energetic, professional, and personable. Drawing on his strong technical knowledge, machining, part salvage, and maintenance reliability background, he is able to effectively communicate technical information to a diverse audience. Jim excels at helping customers, students, managers, and executives alike grasp the value of this information and understand how it relates to their business, education, or performance.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Jim enjoys a variety of hobbies, including playing guitar, Jeeps, and fishing.
