Continuing with the philosophical, I want to share with you one of the approaches that I used when I was in a leadership position as an employee.  One thing I teach – and this does not just apply to Capital Goods Industry Management, but to management in every industry – is that we manage process.  We lead people.  Obviously, I was very engaged with my team.  Here is one of my standard approaches.

  1. What do I do that you like and you want me to continue doing?

  1. What do I do that you don’t like  and you want me to stop doing?

  1. What do I do that doesn’t really matter to you?

The responses to these questions allowed me to have a clear view of what my team thought was important.

The time is now…

Over the years, I have used various expressions to make a point or get the attention of a group.  I have taken to calling these words of wisdom “Sleeisms.”  Here is a short list of them.  Enjoy.

  1. Always assume the other person is twice as smart as you are and work twice as hard to prove otherwise
  2. Be happy in your work or work and be happy because you have no choice……… you have to work.
  3. Never forget
    1. People want to do a good job…..
    2. People can always do more than they think they can…..
    3. People are fundamentally lazy….
  4. What you do when no one is looking? That is morality…..that is ethics…. That is character.
  5. What’s it’s all about.
    1. We must all feel some sense of value, we are here for a reason.
    2. We all must leave a mark.
    3. That requires us to be able to measure our own progress or accomplishment each day
    4. We must feel relevant, important no matter in what manner.
  6. We must always remember Rudyard Kipling
    1. If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs and blaming it on you…you’ll be a man my son
  7. It is always too early to start losing and NEVER too early to start winning
  8. It is hard to soar with the eagles if you stay up with the turkeys at night
  9. Man is like the turtle…..you have to stick your neck out in order to get ahead
  10. Nine men impregnating the same woman cannot deliver a baby in one month or to quote Warren Buffet “you can’t produce a baby in one month by getting nine women pregnant.”
  11. Give More Stress… than you receive
  12. Depression is nothing more than anger turned inward
  13. The basics of teaching and learning
    1. Ignorance is not knowing what to do.
    2. Stupidity is knowing what to do and not doing it.
    3. Insanity is continuing to do what you have always done expecting different results.
  14. Before you can be of any value to anyone else…you have to be of value to yourself.
  15. Life is simple – it is people that screw it up.

American Express coined the phrase “Membership has its privileges.”  This is entirely true.  Most of us have professional memberships to various organizations: the Associated Equipment Distributors, the National Trailer Distributor’s Association, the National Groundwater Association, the National Trailer Equipment Association, just to name a few.

We are inviting you to become members of our own group, Learning Without Scars, because we want to recognize individuals and businesses that want to participate in their personal and professional growth.  We discussed doing this by means of special promotions and loyalty programs, amongst many difference alternatives.

We settled on the membership approach.

By joining Learning Without Scars at the nominal cost of $35,00 per year, we have found that we can offer more to you for less.

All members receive a price reduction of 30% on all LWS learning products.  That means that all webinars, self study programs, and classroom programs will be offered at a 30% price reduction to our members.  For those of you who know me, please note that this is NOT a discount!  I still hate discounts.

So, what are you waiting for?  Spend $35.00 and start saving.

You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor.

When a man feels throbbing in him the power to do what he undertakes as well as it can possibly be done, this is happiness, this is success.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.

This month I want to highlight Orison Marden

  1. Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.

  1. Believe with all your heart that you will do what you were made to do.

  1. Most of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them.

  1. All men who have achieved great things have been great dreamers.

  1. We cannot rise higher than our thought of ourselves.

  1. If you do not feel yourself growing in your work and your life broadening and deepening, if your task is not a perpetual tonic to you, you have not found your place.

  1. There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something tomorrow.

  1. Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great. Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them.

  1. The golden opportunity you are seeking is in yourself. It is not in your environment, it is not in luck or chance, or the help of others, it is in yourself alone.

  1. What keeps so many people back is simply the unwillingness to pay the price, to make the exertion, the effort to sacrifice their ease and comfort.

May 2015 be everything that each of you desires and deserves.

Happy New Year…

Webinars come in a wide variety of forms and flavors. Some are offered for free as a means to whet your appetite and get you to buy other services. Others represent a transference of information en masse.   Then, there are many options in between. We have already told you about our new dynamic. Now we are putting our money where our mouth is.

Learning Without Scars represents our teaching business for the next twenty years. Perhaps it will morph again, who knows, but our intent is to continue to stay current and hopefully at the front of the pack.

In 2015 we want to change the dynamic of learning with webinars and we are making a one year price change to make a difference for our clients.

Effective immediately, our webinars will be priced at $100.00. If you are a Learning Without Scars member that price becomes $70.00.

So now it is up to you. We have done our bit and dropped the member price dramatically. Do you want to take advantage of this stunningly low price for an hour of quality learning?

The time is now…

I began my career as an educator.  There was nothing I enjoyed more than seeing the light go on for a student – unless, of course, it was shocking them with my unorthodox methods.

Today, the landscape of education has shifted.  We have moved from the traditional classroom to the world wide web.  Webinars have become one of the most convenient and cost-effective learning tools for continuing education, and even mainstream university programs.

A webinar is typically a static process.

We are throwing that idea out the window.

We use a projector at a 16:10 aspect ratio, and a high definition camera.  Instead of our students watching Power Point slides go by, we present information, and then switch to conference format.  I move in front of the camera, and our webinar turns into a classroom discussion.

There is no better way for you to receive the training you need to advance personally, and advance your company, than to try one of our webinars.

I have pooled the knowledge of the past 45 years of my experience, as well as incorporating the latest, cutting edge theory and practice across the industry, to help the light go on for all of you.

Move forward in this New Year.

The time is now…

What sets you apart?

It is all too easy to recognize the similarities among service departments, parts departments, and product support salespeople.  In order to stand out amongst the crowd, your training helps you make your mark.  Your training teaches you what your work looks like when it is right.

I have been working in the capital goods industry for 45 years.  I have implemented new systems, and worked in nearly every product support position within the dealership.  With this knowledge under my belt, I have moved into the newest teaching module: the webinar.

Webinars enable students to take a course in a brief format, from the comfort of their own office or home.  By and large, webinars are becoming the preferred method for training across industries.  The trick is in finding the right program, with the right instructor.

Without any exaggeration, I can tell you that there is no one in our industry doing what we do.  There is no other place for you to learn WHAT we can teach you, in the WAY we teach it.

That is what sets us apart.

At Learning Without Scars, we don’t want you to passively receive information.

We’ve ramped up the webinar into a truly interactive, multi-media event.  Our webinars take not only my 45 years of background and knowledge, but present the material in an “internet conference.”  As a student, you will see, hear, and be able to actively participate in each webinar.

In 2015, why don’t you join us?  Set yourself apart, professionally, and start one of our series of webinars.

For more information on the 40 different webinars we will be offering, please visit https://learningwithoutscars.org/webinars/

Last month I highlighted the great teacher as being a person who inspired. I want to suggest that each of you read about John Wooden, UCLA Basketball Coach extraordinaire.

He was one who was clear on expectations – Clarity

The expectations were divorced from outcomes – which you don’t control and all about process – which you do control.

Like many people he had some “foundations pillars.” (My words not his)

They were in two sets of three

First:

  • Never Lie
  • Never Cheat
  • Never Steal

Pretty simple and straightforward.

Second:

  • Don’t Whine
  • Don’t Complain
  • Don’t Make Excuses

Coach Wooden defined SUCCESS as follows:

Peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best you are capable of becoming.

May YOU each have peace of mind.

Today I had the opportunity to read December’s issue of CED magazine.  This is the last month I will be a contributing writer to the magazine, and I am touched and thankful for the tribute the Associated Equipment Distributors wrote in their magazine.  We have had a wonderful professional relationship over these many years, and I wish you the best in your new endeavors.
