Leaders With Skills and Knowledge – the PLP.

We started our journey of assisting in employee development in the early 1990s with the management training programs we developed for the Parts and Service Teams. We created two-day classroom programs for executives, management, supervision and first line team leaders. These classes focused on operations, finance, selling and management supplemented with a manual of roughly 200 pages in length.

What we didn’t do was offer a test for each program and progress testing to plant the knowledge more deeply into the student’s mind. You will find another blog post later this week from the wonderful book “Make It Stick” which is aimed at “The Science of Successful Learning.”

The Quest, Learning Centers, classroom courses were developed and then tested with executives who sat through the programs as they were being developed to assist us in how these programs were created.

Since the inception of these leadership classes we have had the opportunity to teach more than 4,000 dealer employees.

This film will define and describe how the PLP – Planned Learning Programs, classes work. Each one covers ten classes and provides twenty hours of training. The PLP programs are three years and covers thirty classes with sixty hours of knowledge transfer.

With the PLP’s we have a twenty question, multiple choice exam at the conclusion and also put forward “quizzes” three or four times through the learning experience. These “tests” are aimed, as indicated above, at implanting the knowledge more completely into the students’ mind. The science of learning tells us that testing stops almost completely forgetting the content of the class.

The film you are about to see, which is the final program in the troika of learning and will give you an explanation of the PLP Program. I hope you enjoy it.

Management Mentoring and Coaching Program

A coach’s job is to bring out the best in the individual and the team.

We always work here to develop programs that fill needs within our industry.  We have now developed a mentoring and coaching program addressing client needs in the area of individual employee development. We were approached with the need to assist with individual managers in accelerating their development on the job. This also covered those instances where an employee was having difficulty in adjusting to a new role.

These programs have been divided into three pieces: Learning On Demand, Films and Work Assignments.  Over the course of this next week, we are going to tackle each of these pieces in an individual post.

Learning On Demand

The Learning On Demand programs consist of a pre-test, a video program and a final assessment. The course program itself lasts approximately two hours.  There will be discussions with the manager to review the program and to consider specific action items for the week ahead after the course has been completed.

We will recommend Specific Learning Programs – LOD – that apply to the work of the manager. For instance:
1. Basic Management
2. Leadership
3. Make It Matter
4. Time Management
5. Change
6. The Art of the Possible
7. Standards of Performance
8. Best Practices
9. The Balanced Scorecard
10. Activity Based Management

These programs will be enhanced, and the individual learning and knowledge deepened, with individualized coaching to follow up on the classes.  In addition, Ron tailors live online coursework for each manager who is taking a Mentoring and Coaching program.

Next, we will cover the learning films that Ron uses to build upon the knowledge in the online courses.

Today – for Friday Filosophy #2016-9 – I would like to address productivity. First is the definition. Productivity is an economic measure of output per unit of input. Inputs typically cover labor (other things as well but labor for our purpose today) while output is typically measured in revenues.

Today we are living in “The Computer Age.” How has the computer changed productivity? Is it for the better or not? A recent TED talk I saw highlighted that our world is one where it is now “Brains not Brawn” – “Ideas not Things” – “Mind not Matter.” We are also seeing a decoupling of our economy in traditional ways. Productivity increases have not translated into either more jobs or better pay. So here is our Friday Filosophy for you to contemplate.  Please send me your thoughts or comments. Thanks.

There is no substitute for hard work.

The least productive people are usually the ones who are most in favor of holding meetings.

Thomas Sowell

No matter how great the talent or efforts, some things just take time. You can’t produce a baby in one month by getting nine women pregnant.

Warren Buffett

Nine men impregnating the same woman cannot deliver a baby in a month.

Nothing is less productive than to make more efficient what should not be done at all.

Peter Drucker

The way we measure productivity is flawed. People checking their BlackBerry over dinner is not the measure of productivity.

Today, for our Friday Filosophy #2015-25 I am taking a different tack. I am going to give you a summer reading list. Reading is a wonderful activity. You can be transported to different places in the world as well as in your mind. Learning is a tremendously important activity for me. It is one of the key activities in my quest to stay current. Enjoy.

The End of College: Creating the Future of Learning and the University of Everywhere. Author: Kevin Carey. This is an eye-opening read.

“The University of Everywhere is where students of the future will go to college.  Parts of it will be familiar to anyone who’s gotten a great college education, because some aspects of human learning are eternal. But in many respects, it will be like nothing that has come before.” ~ Kevin Carey

BOLD: How to go big and create wealth and impact the world.  Authors: Peter H. Diamandis and Steven Kotler.

“The day before something is a breakthrough, it’s a crazy idea.” ~ Peter H. Diamandis

Executive Toughness: The Mental-Training program to increase your Leadership Performance.  Author: Dr. Jason Selk

“Mental toughness is the ability to focus on and execute solutions, especially in the face of adversity.” ~ Dr. Jason Selk

I would also direct you to our new business. Learning Without Scars is the Company we created to replace our Quest, Learning Centers, Inc. in the fall of 2014. Check it out at www.learningwithoutscars.org.  There are sixty two different learning opportunities for you to take advantage of and continue your personal growth.  The recommended summer reading is just a part of the advancement of your goals.

Today I had the opportunity to read December’s issue of CED magazine.  This is the last month I will be a contributing writer to the magazine, and I am touched and thankful for the tribute the Associated Equipment Distributors wrote in their magazine.  We have had a wonderful professional relationship over these many years, and I wish you the best in your new endeavors.
